First Soloist Beatriz Stix-Brunell left the Company after 11 years to begin an academic career at Stamford University in Palo Alto, California and Principal Edward Watson, now a Company Répétiteur, retires as a dancer with the Company after his performances in The Dante Project.
The Royal Ballet welcomes four dancers from The Royal Ballet School to the Company on the Aud Jebsen Young Dancers Programme for the 2021/22 Season: Olivia Findlay, Ava May Llewellyn, Viola Pantuso and Alix Van Tiggelen.
Alix was a Ballet Association Award winner at the end of her first year in the Upper School. Following the disruption of the pandemic and with the generous support of Aud Jebsen, The Royal Ballet has extended the contracts of Denilson Almeida, Daichi Ikarashi, James Large, Hannah Park, Maddison Pritchard and Marianna Tsembenhoi on the Programme for a second season. Denilson is a former Association Award Winner. Marco Masciari also continues as a Prix de Lausanne dancer for a second season.
The Royal Ballet also welcomes Joseph Toonga on a two-year programme as the Company’s Emerging Choreographer. His dance productions are embedded in hip-hop and inspired by real life stories. He has created works for many dance companies and set up his own, Just Us Dance Theatre (JUDT) in 2007. He won the Best Choreography Award at the Reverb Dance Festival (New York) in 2015.
The Royal Ballet has also announced new appointments to the Music Department. Jonathan Lo is appointed as Royal Ballet Staff Conductor for the new season; Charlotte Politi, born in Paris but brought up in Italy, takes up the two-year Constant Lambert Conducting Fellowship; Edo Frenkel joins the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme as Ballet Conductor; and Hannah Quinn joins as Company Pianist.
You will be saddened to hear of the death of our member Sheila Goldberg and of former New York City Ballet legend Patricia Wilde.
We send our congratulations to former Royal Ballet Principal Thiago Soares on his appointment as Artistic Director of Monterrey Ballet in Mexico and to First Soloist Valentino Zucchetti on winning the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Best New Dance for his Scherzo.
You may be interested to hear that former Royal Ballet Principal Mara Galeazzi has written a new book, Shadow Aspect, My Journey of Expression, in collaboration with photographer Jason Ashwood. Whilst the book centres around her performance in Tim Podesta’s ballet Shadow Aspect, Mara looks back over her life and the challenges that helped develop her artistry.
This season’s recipient of the Association’s Elmhurst Ballet School Award winner 2021 is Satsuki Ueda. Our President and Elmhurst’s Artistic Director Robert Parker says that “she is a lovely Japanese ballerina who recently reached the finals of the Prix de Lausanne competition and has been working alongside BRB in Cinderella as a 'Star'.”
