On Wednesday 8 January 2020, we will have our annual meeting with our Royal Ballet School Award winners. 2nd Year Alix Van Tiggelen from Belgium and 3rd Years Hanna Park from South Korea and Denilson Almeida Afonso from Brazil will be joined by Jessica Clarke, Artistic Manager for the Upper School.
Trained at The Royal Ballet School, Jessica joined Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and relocated with them to Birmingham where she danced a variety of soloist and principal roles and created roles in ballets by Sir Kenneth MacMillan, David Bintley, Vincent Redmon amongst others. Jessica retired from dancing in 1998 and attained the Associate Teachers’ AISTD qualification of the Cecchetti Branch of ISTD and in 2007 the RBS PDTC with distinction. She taught for one year at the Rambert School before joining the Royal Ballet School in 2008.
We look forward to hearing about her role as Artistic Manager of the Upper School, as well as looking back on her career. These meetings with students from a variety of backgrounds are always very interesting and give members an opportunity to meet young dancers before they embark on their careers. We encourage you to attend.
On Wednesday 29 January 2020, we are delighted to welcome our President and former Royal Ballet Director Dame Monica Mason as our guest. This will be the first time Monica has spoken to the Association since she retired as Director in 2012, so there is much for us to catch up on.
She has been extremely busy and is currently involved in rehearsals of her 2006 production of The Sleeping Beauty. In 2014 she became Chairman of The Royal Ballet Development Fund (now The Dance Professionals Fund). She has been appointed a Patron of Encore Dance at Tring School of Performing Arts and a Vice-President of The Royal Academy of Dance in 2019.
We are very privileged that Monica always finds time in her busy schedule to attend our Annual Dinners. We can expect a fascinating evening.
